In 2014-Just Create It!!.

Many times I watch students and other artists concentrate so hard on what they should do in creating or just the next step in making a piece of art— they remove the flow of of their creativity with their actions. It seems they want to originate the perfect idea or the perfect piece of art and in the process they get stuck. Recently I’ve been thinking of all sorts of statements and ideas surrounding creativity. It seems to come easy to me when someone else is looking at what I do, but it isn’t necessarily true. If I had a quarter for every time someone said to me “oh but it’s easy for you you’re so creative”— I’d be really rich.  

I do have a secret though and that is something another well know artist said to me around 20 years ago. She told me not to belabor anything or make the current piece my “swan song”. She said do it and do another and another and another and in that work there will be some great pieces and some not so great pieces. When I started doing that I learned a lot about creating. I also discovered that for me it is in the creating, not the ending point. The process that leads to another process and more creating and experimenting is where the zest is. 

You are different every time you create a piece. Sometimes things work and sometimes you don’t, but in doing the work you start to progress and grow in your work. You start to fell more for the flow of the work and you love what you do. So this year my Buzz phrase is “JUST CREATE IT! Let all else evolve from there. If it feels good do it. Create and do something over and over and over and you will see it start to evolve. Attention to a subject promotes your genius.
