The encaustic process intrigues me and I find it a great mix with digital prints. My
work with encaustic allows me to expand my ideas while assembling surfaces.
In this workshop, I will take you through my process working with both my digital
prints on a few types of surfaces and encaustic medium. Amazing texture can be
achieved mixing the two mediums. If you are looking to learn a lot about the
encaustic process, you can check out the books in the materials list. We will not be
learning the total encaustic process, but how it relates to mixing digital prints, wax
and texture from my point of view. If you want to get into encaustic work I advise you
to take a workshop or find books on the subject. For books on the step by step
process in encaustic check the material list at the end of the workshop. I list my
favorite books on the subject.
Mixed Surfaces Journal: Part 3
Mixed Surfaces Journal concludes with part 3.This video part of the workshop instruction develops the assembling of the elements from the first 2 workshops. Two journals are constructed showing various ideas on accomplishing that task.
You will get a variety of ideas on how to create and add your mixed surfaces into a journal format.Of course there are infinite ways to add your own ideas of what you would like from your personal journal.Use the ideas presented and make up some of your own.
Mixed Surfaces Journal: Part 2
This month is part 2 of a 3 part workshop about creating journals with mixed
surfaces. The ideas are presented in a 44 minute video using Photoshop CS5.
In this part of the workshop we will take a look at the digital element to combine with
your papers and fabrics you painted in the part 1.
Mixed Surfaces Journal: Part 1
This is a 3 part workshop about creating journals with mixed surfaces.
The workshop is presented by a video and a pdf.
In this first part we will color our papers and fabrics along with pulling together other
scraps and elements to be added to the mix of journal surfaces.
Metal Collage Process Workshop
This metal collage process workshop is a 22 minute video. The video will take you
through the creation of one of my metal collages. The materials include digital prints
on printing plates, wire assemblages, hardware cloth among other added elements.
Materials will be explored (some shown and not used) and ideas developed as I
work my way through this piece.
Process workshops show and talk about a process, but are not actually a complete
how to. Using your creativity, draw from the information and create your original
artwork with materials of your choice. Improvise to suit your own purposes.
Metal Elements for Mixed Media
For this video workshop we will look at using metal wire, digital prints on assorted
types
or metal/metal mesh-along with other elements that mix with your mixed media art.
This is a process workshop not a project workshop. I will share techniques that I have
been using in some of my current work with metals.
As far as supplies go- here is what you will see in this video—
* Hardware Cloth
*Digital prints on beverage cans—printing plate—metal mesh (brass)—36 gauge
*Wire—19 gauge black and heavy weight wire unknown gauge, it is just sold as barb
wire in my hardware store.
*Hole punch
* Small dowel rod
*Pliers
*Found rusty objects
*Dremel Tool
Lightweight Airy Surfaces
An interesting way to create surfaces is to build them with “airy”
or “empty areas”.
By this I mean to use gauze or cheesecloth surfaces and accentuate the lightness of
the surface before applying the precoat. Also you can experiment with a variety of
synthetic surfaces and achieve intriguing effects.
For this video workshop we will look at cheesecloth, melted reemay and synthetic felt.
Although synthetics are often melted after printing, these surfaces can be altered
before printing. The only parameters for the synthetics is that after manipulating they
flow safely through your printers. Take some of the ideas presented and see how far
you can take this type of process.
Finish Your Journal-Assembling Pages
Seems I am always making journals.
Whether it is for a workshop or just because I
get the urge, there are journals and journal pieces all over my studio.
Once the covers and pages are complete, they need to be assembled. covers
attaching your pages when
you have finished all the elements to your journal.
Experimenting with Surface Textures
In this video workshop we well look at a couple of ways to create simple textures on
a surface before printing. Fabric, paper and canvas are a few of the surfaces that
work well with these techniques. As you add texture keep it thin enough so the
surface will fit safely through you printer.
Once the textures are dry, apply the precoat of your choice—use a carrier sheet and
print.
For this workshop I used the following items: continued in workshop pdf…..
Enhance Surfaces Before Printing
Developing infinite ways to create interesting surfaces to print or overprint is one of
my favorite things. There is nothing more exciting than watching an incredible print
emerge from your printer. Adding elements adds surface texture and dimension……
